The European Union Centre at RMIT University in conjunction with PASCAL International Observatory invites you to attend a public lecture “Towards an Africanisation of Community Engagement and Service Learning” with guest speaker Professor Julia Preece.

This paper argues that the South African research community could benefit by engaging in more collaborative partnerships within the African continent in relation to community engagement.  This argument relates to literature in South Africa concerning an africanised notion of service learning (SL) and community engagement (CE), the university’s engagement contribution to sustainable development and very recent discussions which suggest that South Africa is now ready to look beyond its borders for mutual exploration of local solutions to local problems.

About the speaker

Julia Preece was Professor of Adult Education at the National University of Lesotho and Professor of Adult and Lifelong Education and Director of the Centre for Research and Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning at the University of Glasgow.  She has worked at the Universities of Botswana, Surrey and Lancaster to which she ran a voluntary sector community education and development project in Aston, Birmingham.

All are welcome at this free event.  Light refreshments will be served.
