PASCAL International Observatory in partnership with Unisa and the City of Tshwane will be offering a Learning Cities 2020 Municipal Development Workshop at Unisa on 21 August 2014. This is the fourth international workshop on Learning Cities, following previous events in Cork, Glasgow and Tampere, and is by invitation.

We will collectively address the following burning issues during this workshop:

  1. What are the correct economic and business policies and practices at city level to strengthen economic growth?
  2. How can the growth-employment-entrepreneurship-nexus at city level be strengthened to ensure employment, entrepreneurship, poverty reduction and wealth transfer?
  3. How can good city management and excellent service delivery be ensured?
  4. In what ways can active citizenry, economic participation and democracy at city level be strengthened?
  5. How can continuous physical, asset, social, human and environmental capital development at city level be ensured?

Workshop invitations and programmes have been sent to all development agencies, municipal managers and economic development managers of all the municipalities in South Africa. The invitation was also posted on the site of the Economic Development Unit at the South African Local Government Association which consist of 3000 members of the Economic and Development Hub of all the provinces.

Professor Carel Van Aardt and his team has developed 12 indicators for municipalities against which their performance is profiled. The profiles are being drawn with cartoon characters designed by Nigel Babb from Burning Duck. He will also capture the workshop proceedings and the way forward in drawings that will be availed electronically to all participants afterwards.

The Vice-Chancellor of Unisa, Prof Mandla Makhanya as well as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof Narend Baijnath will both be attending the event as well as PASCAL Chair, Professor Josef Konvitz.
