August 27th-30th: as in previous years, the XVI International Service-Learning Week took place. More than 500 people from all over Argentina and the rest of Latin America, as well as from North America, Europe, Africa and Asia participated. The activities included the 22nd International Service-Learning Conference, the V Service-Learning Researchers Symposium, the 1st Latin American Meeting of "Service-Learning in the Arts", the 23rd meeting of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network, the Solidarity Students Meeting and Visits Program to institutions that develop solidarity educational experiences.

22nd International Service-Learning Conference

This year the 22nd International Service-Learning Conference was held on August 29-30, 2019 with 550 attendees and more than 200 foreign representatives from 16 countries. In this edition, Prof. María Nieves Tapia focused her key presentation on how to link service-learning and civic education in the 21st Century, using technology as a tool for collective construction. Furthermore, in line with the V Researchers' Symposium, it was decided to give prominence to research on service-learning and how projects are evaluated, as well as the usual panels of Award winning experiences from Argentina and Uruguay, the scenario for service-learning around the world and concurrent sessions in the afternoon. V Service-Learning Researchers Symposium

The V Service-Learning Researchers Symposium was held on August 28 at the Centro de Altos Estudios (CAEU - OEI Argentina), organized by CLAYSS and with the support of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network and IARSLCE, the International Association of Researchers in Service-Learning and Community Engagement. It was attended by 115 people who are developing research related to Service-Learning. This year we received 68 papers, 45 of which were approved. These papers will be soon available in the V JIAS digital book.

Colleagues from Central and Eastern Europe in the XVI International Service-Learning Week

This year 4 colleagues from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) participated: Zeljka Marjanovic & Jasmina Catic - MIOS (Bosnia Herzegovina), Jehona Gjurgjeala - TOKA (Kosovo), Jelena Fuštic - Forum MNE (Montenegro). It was a very intense week with a busy schedule of activities.

I "Service-Learning in the Arts" Latin American Meeting

On August 28, the First "Service-Learning in the Arts" Latin American Meeting was held, attended by 50 people including school heads, teachers and students from the 11 participating institutions, CSO leaders and public officials involved in education from Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. The "Service-Learning in the Arts" Program supports 11 schools and Higher Education institutions in Argentina, providing training, technical assistance and economic support for the development of service-learning projects and artistic education.

Visits to institutions that develop solidarity educational experiences

The Visits Program to service-learning experiences opened the International SL Week with a tour of two educational institutions in Buenos Aires that carry out solidarity projects. Twenty-five foreigners from Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Spain, Mexico, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro participated in the program and visited the following institutions:
- EES N° 34 "María Luisa Anido" from Morón, which provides tutoring and meeting instances for the exchange of musical experiences with Community Centers and other educational institutions in the area; and
- Faculty of Nutrition of the University of Buenos Aires, where the teachers presented their solidarity projects and institutionalization trajectory within the UBA.
A specialist from Bosnia-Herzegovina who participated in the Programme commented “The field visit to the SL projects, especially to the Maria Luisa Anido school, was enlightening in manner that I have seen all the efforts that teachers and students are having in order to keep their motivation for a change. It has also been enlightening in a way that I can compare it with our schools and lack of our teacher's motivation.”

Second National Networks Meeting -Educapaz

Within the framework of the National Peace Programme (EDUCAPAZ), the Second National Meeting "Transformations" was held in the city of Santiago de Cali on 19, 20 and 21 September: from personal change to advocacy in educational policy. More than 800 teachers, principals, students and community leaders from all over Colombia attended and gathered around a single purpose: education for peace.
Our representative there was Lic Sebastián Puglisi, who participated in the conversation: "Practices and pedagogical tools for a comprehensive education" and was also in charge of the workshop: "How to start a SL project". We continue as allies in this important Colombian national program, which collaborates by bringing peace from education to schools and urban and rural communities in the fellow country.

CLAYSS URUGUAY HEADQUARTERS

Balance of Training for Prison Operators organized between INR - CEFOPEN and CLAYSS Uruguay Headquarters

The coordinated training between the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR) and CLAYSS (Uruguay Headquarters) developed in Montevideo, Colonia, Florida, Maldonado, Salto, Paysandú and Soriano are being closed. During September, the Closing Days of the training have been carried out; as the final product of the training students present, Service-Learning projects proposals for the different units where they will later work as operators. Within this framework, more than 40 Service-Learning projects were presented.

Uruguay at the 22nd International Service-Learning Conference

The Uruguayan delegation also joined the International Service-Learning Week in Buenos Aires, with participation in panels, workshops and reflection spaces. Among them were the presentations of the experiences of Kindergarten No. 138 of Paso de los Toros with its proposal "We Learn by Recycling", 88 "Alfredo Nobel" from Las Violetas in Canelones with his proposal "We need to investigate", the project "Visual Arts Open Museum" of the Liceo San Gregorio de Polanco, Tacuarembó; and the project of the FPB Aeroparque, Canelones and the presentation of the Teachers Training College "Maestro Dardo Ramos" of Tacuarembó, were the proposals of initiatives and SL projects presented during the Conference.

SOLIDARITY YOUTH

Solidarity Students Meeting: protagonists voice in the Conference

On August 30th within the 22nd International Service-Learning Conference the Solidarity Students Meeting was held. About 60 high school and university students from Argentina (City of Buenos Aires, Quilmes, Neuquén, Mar del Plata), Brazil, Israel, United States and Spain participated. At the end of the Conference, the students read the Meeting conclusions, thanking all teachers for the possibility of doing these experiences and asking them to promote service-learning experiences with their students.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION


CLAYSS Online training News

116 participants from Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe attend second semester virtual courses on CLAYSS platform. They are educators who bring their knowledge about service-learning and share it, finding a collaborative work space in which, together with CLAYSS tutors, shed light on the characteristics of good practices in service-learning projects, and reinforce the pedagogical foundation that allows value proposals to be generated for their institutions. There is a specific course for Basic Education, another for Higher Education and another for those who, with more experience in project management, are trained as promoters for their own organizations and their community.

XXIII Meeting of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network

On August 27, a new meeting of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network was held to work and share joint projects and exchange impressions on actions, paths and pending challenges. This year the meeting took place in the Leopoldo Marechal Hall of the Ministry of Education from Argentina, and was attended by more than 50 representatives of member institutions from more than 10 countries. In a fraternal and festive atmosphere, the participants renewed their commitment to Service-Learning, its promotion and expansion.

REASE- Registration open for the 7th National Service-Learning Conference- Chile

The 7th National Service-Learning Conference 2019 organized by the National Service-Learning Network, REASE, together with the University of Chile will be held in the city of Santiago, in the Andrés Bello Campus of the University of Chile, with the participation of Nieves Tapia. The Conference will present different Service-Learning experiences, through presentations and workshops for students, teachers and community partners to share and exchange their views on the implementation and contributions to the development of significant learning. It is aimed at institutions of Higher Education, Colleges, Schools, Municipalities, Community Partners and the entire community interested in the methodology. NYLC 31st Annual National Service-Learning Conference

IARSLCE has announced the election of the following individuals to the Board of Directors beginning October 2019: Glenn Bowen, Stephen Chan, Tim Eatman, Rochelle Jackson-Smarr, Tania Mitchell, Estrella Plaxton-Moore. Jennifer Kirkland will also represent the Graduate Student Network.
