The Talloires Network E-Newsletter - March 2013
The Talloires Network is one of the partners with whom PASCAL collaborates, and which is a co-signatory to the September 23 2010 Communique "Enhancing North-South Cooperation in Community-University Engagement".
The Network enjoys a high profile and is among the several national and international bodies encouraging universities worldwide to adopt a more centrally-focussed universities' 'third mission' commitment to community service in its different senses and settings.

Update from the Chair: President Mark Gearan
I am pleased to report that the nomination and selection process for the fifth annual MacJannet Prize is well underway. In the five-year history of the MacJannet Prize, 149 Talloires Network member universities from 39 countries have nominated at least 1 program for consideration. For this year’s MacJannet Prize, we received 61 nominations from 48 universities in 22 countries. Once again, the quality and diversity of the projects that have been nominated is remarkable and speaks to the excellent civic and community engagement work being undertaken at a number of Talloires Network member universities. From this competitive pool, the Secretariat has selected 11 semifinalists. The broadly representative MacJannet Prize Selection Committee convening in April will choose three prize winners, to be formally announced in May. Look for more information on the Talloires Network website in the coming weeks. This month’s newsletter also features the ninth in our series of featured profiles of Leaders in the Civic Engagement Movement, María-Nieves Tapia, Director of the Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario (CLAYSS), the Talloires Network’s regional partner in Latin America. A prominent pioneer and innovative leader in the global service learning movement, Nieves has advised and collaborated with the Network on myriad projects including the MacJannet Prize, International Volunteers Exchange, and Youth Economic Participation Initiative. CLAYSS promotes service learning throughout Latin America, providing training, generating financial resources, developing projects, and partnering with government, NGOs and businesses. Lastly, we are delighted in this edition of the newsletter to formally announce the Talloires Network Professional Development Initiative. This program, made possible by a grant from the Pearson Foundation and managed by Innovations in Civic Participation, aims to strengthen leadership and management in higher education globally and to facilitate institutional commitment and change in teaching and research as applied to civic engagement efforts. On February 19 and 20, 2013, at the University of South Africa in Pretoria, the South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum (SAHECEF) held the second seminar in its year long series, focusing on Developing a Green Economy: Renewable Energy, Climate Change and Social Justice. 39 delegates from 20 universities attended 8 presentations on the seminar's topics.
Proposals are now being accepted for the 8th Annual EURECA Conference: People for Progress to be held at American University of Cairo, April 21 and 22, 2013.Conference proposals invite undergraduate original works including research papers, poster presentations, social documentaries, literary work, scientific innovation, and social marketing campaign. Proposals must be submitted by March 24, 2013. 
The Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning requests calls for proposals to host CACSL 2014 - a conference to connect CSL practitioners and researchers from across Canada to learn together. 
The deadline for applications is March 31, 2013. The ACU is proud of its continuing partnership with WISE and is delighted to announce that the ‘2013 WISE Awards’ has opened its call for applications. The WISE Awards aim each year to celebrate six innovative educational projects for their positive contribution within a community or society and we warmly encourage our member universities to submit proposals. 
Applications are being accepted until March 15 for AAC&U's Institute on Integrative Learning and the Departments, to be held July 10 - 14 at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. The institute is intended for colleges and universities interested in building faculty and departmental leadership for advancement of knowledge of multiple disciplines, inquiry and critical thinking, personal and social responsibility, civic learning, global knowledge and skills, and, particularly, integrative and applied learning. 
The editors of the International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering, Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (IJSLE) are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a Special Edition of the Journal. The special edition will be entitled ‘Opportunities and Barriers to Integrating Service Learning in Engineering into Engineering Education’. Manuscript submittal deadline is August 30, 2013 – with publication planned for December 2013. 
The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) is accepting proposals until April 1, 2013 for the 2013 Conference: Transforming and Sustaining Communities Through Partnerships to be held October 26 to 29, 2013 in Louisville, Kentucky. 
The Spring 2012 edition of the Engagement Australia's peer-reviewed e-Journal, the Australasian Journal of University-Community Engagement, is now available. Published bi-annually, the e-journal demonstrates the diversity of activity that occurs such as social responsiveness in higher education, community engaged learning and research, collaborative partnerships and higher education post-Bradley is explored, analyzed and reviewed. 
Written by Okoth Fred Mudhai, this book takes a critical look at the links between civil actors, new media, and political change, using case studies from Africa. Examining continental trends, with particular focus on urban political non-state actors in Kenya and Zambia, Mudhai argues that new information and communication technologies enhance the efficiency and operations of civic actors, making it easier for them to challenge or overcome state obstacles, but that states remain powerful controllers of key instruments of dominance, minimizing any impact from civic actors using these technologies. 
Latin America's New Knowledge Economy reviews the policies, institutions, and programs that helped bring about these changes, as well as their outcomes in terms of access, workforce training, and research. In the book, leading scholars from Latin America in the U.S. explore key issues, including higher education’s role in advanced workforce development, trends in academic mobility and outcomes for brain circulation, and investment in the region by U.S. universities and corporations. 
Edited by Brian Pusser, Ken Kempner, Simon Marginson and Imanol Ordorika, the latest book in the International Studies in Higher Education series, Universities and the Public Sphere addresses the vital role of research universities as global public spheres, sites where public interaction, conversation and deliberation take place, and where the nature of the State and private interests can be openly debated and contested. 
An educated, committed citizenry deeply involved in creating and sustaining diverse democratic societies is essential for human progress and advancing the quality of life for all. In this book, edited by Sjur Bergan, Ira Harkavy and Hilligje van't Land, the authors – academics, policy makers and practitioners from Europe and the United States – argue this point through case studies, making the case for why democratic re-imagination and innovation cannot succeed without higher education and why higher education cannot fulfill its educational, academic and societal missions without working for the common good. 
The Community and Civic Engagement Initiative within Auburn University’s College of Liberal Arts announces the first Academy for Civic Professionalism for faculty in the arts, social sciences and humanities who are interested in incorporating the tenets of civic professionalism into their courses, outreach scholarship and P & T documentation. ACP will provide an intense three-day workshop for successful participants. ACP is limited to 25 participants so get your application for admission in early.
