As the clock ticks down towards the date on which the United Kingdom (UK) is due to leave the European Union (EU), many details continue to be unclear. It has been only in the last month that the UK Government has been able to present its White Paper setting out its preferred option for Brexit.
That was accompanied, however, by clear evidence of continuing division within Prime Minister May’s Conservative Party, as two senior Ministers both resigned. All this before the EU has had an opportunity to begin to respond to the May Government’s position.
What are the options? How might this next period play out, both within the UK and in the negotiations themselves? What might the implications yet be for Australia, and its positioning with respect to both the EU and the UK?
To discuss these questions, we are delighted to welcome Dr Annmarie Elijah, Associate Director of the Centre for European Studies at the Australian National University. A number of other academics will join the discussion and share their views. The event will be chaired by the Director of the EU Centre at RMIT, Professor Bruce Wilson.
This will be the second of a renewed series of seminars on Brexit hosted in 2018 by the EU Centre in the Social and Global Studies Research Centre, GUSS, RMIT.

Dr Annmarie Elijah is Associate Director of the ANU Centre for European Studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne which examined Australia, Britain and Europe during the British bids for European Community membership. She was a policy officer in the Australian Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet between 2002 and 2006. Annmarie’s research focusses on Australia-EU relations, regional economic integration, comparative regionalism, federalism and trade policy. She recently co-edited a book on Australia-EU trade relations (ANU Press, 2017). She was successful in securing EU research funding through the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Activities, including a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU-Australia Economic Cooperation. In 2017 she was a recipient of the ANU Vice Chancellor’s Award for Public Policy and Outreach for her work on Brexit and the Australia-EU trade negotiations.
