Global Education Meeting emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning [8]

Developing education systems that enable people to learn throughout life and through multiple pathways was high on the agenda at the Global Education Meeting in Brussels, which took place from 3 to 5 December. Key messages and commitments on lifelong learning and related topics such as adult education and literacy and the recognition, validation and accreditation of non-formal and informal learning were also highlighted in the meeting’s outcome statement.

UIL AROUND THE WORLD

Paving the way for making lifelong learning for all a reality. [10] An international consultative meeting Shanghai in October 2019 signalled a major step towards developing lifelong learning-oriented education systems. New forms of governance for promoting lifelong learning were explored, while a subsequent two-week workshop [11] built the capacities of representatives from Indonesia, Kenya, Namibia and Viet Nam to develop and implement lifelong learning-oriented education systems in their countries. Both initiatives have guided the development of a Handbook for Lifelong Learning [12], which will be published by UIL in 2019.

The first e-learning course on mainstreaming adult learning and non-formal education into education sector plans ran from 2 October to 27 November 2018. Participants from nine UNESCO Member States countries successfully finalized the course. Read more. [14]

The Global Alliance for Literacy (GAL) has a renewed focus. [15] GAL’s efforts will now target the 20 countries with an adult literacy rate below 50 per cent and the E9 countries, where the largest number of illiterate adults live. This new focus is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly resolution ‘Literacy for life: Shaping future agendas’, which calls for more effective partnerships for the advancement of youth and adult literacy.

The 12 African countries participating in UIL's Action Research: Measuring Literacy Programme Participants’ Learning Outcomes (RAMAA) project have adopted an assessment framework [16]. The RAMAA method has also been highlighted to extract data and learning evidence to measure progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education. Read more. [17]

The German Foreign Office has announced a funding increase to support the work of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL). The voluntary contribution from Germany will be increased by EUR 1.2 million in 2019. [31]Read more. [31]

The second edition of the Hamburg Education Talks was held at UIL on 28 September: Let’s Talk: Refugees. Is education the solution?. A photo exhibition entitled Hope in Despair, which documents life in Afghanistan, with a particular focus on education, gender and peacebuilding, accompanied the event. Read more [34]

The pedagogy of one of the most influential philosophers of education of the twentieth century, Paulo Freire, was the focus of a recent congress
co-organized by UIL in Hamburg in November. Read more. [35] [35]

New global literacy and numeracy indicators have been discussed at the fifth meeting of the Global Alliance to Monitor Learning (GAML), which was held in Hamburg on 17 and 18 October. Read more. [36] [36]

Key literacy stakeholders in Ethiopia took part in a training course from 29 September to 3 October 2018 to help them develop and implement family and intergenerational literacy and learning approaches. Read more. [37] [37]

More than 30 country representatives from the Arab States came together for a regional policy forum on Creating Pathways to Empowerment: Building Alternative Learning Pathways (ALP) and Recognising, Validating and Accrediting (RVA) Non-Formal and Informal Learning in the Arab States.
