Dear Placemaker,
Since rejoining the Project for Public Spaces team as CEO in July, I have been reminded again and again of the impact that placemaking can have in our communities.
Consider, for example, the small town of Wharton, Texas. When Hurricane Harvey hit last year, the Colorado River flooded the homes of over 60% of the town’s 9,000 residents. Last month, PPS began working with local partners and youth activists in Wharton to ensure that their new flood prevention infrastructure serves double duty as a community gathering place, which will improve social resilience and quality of life, as well as physical resilience.
Wharton's story of change is just one of the many that PPS has helped to write over the years. Since 1975, we have worked with more than 3,000 communities around the world, including fifty this year. This past week, we also launched one of our most significant partnerships ever: The Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking, a collaboration with the Brookings Institution and the National Main Street Center that will inspire many more public, private, and civic sector leaders around the U.S. to invest in place as a means to generate widespread social and economic benefits.
