The University of Glasgow is seeking to fill the position of Research Associate, Education and International Development.
Job Purpose
To make a leading research and knowledge exchange contribution to the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Centre for Sustainable, Healthy and Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods (SHLC [1]), an international research consortium, which aims to strengthen capacity to address urban, health and education challenges in fast-growing cities across Africa and Asia. Case study countries are: South Africa, Rwanda, Tanzania, India, Bangladesh, China and the Philippines.
Specifically, the job requires expert knowledge in the area of education in relation to Africa and/or Asia. Candidates with a strong interest in education in urban settings are particularly encouraged to apply. Within the SHLC, education is interpreted broadly to include schooling and other formal education, non-formal and adult education, and ‘learning cities’; applicants with expertise in any of these are welcome.
The post-holder’s main tasks will be:
- To contribute to the development and application of qualitative and quantitative research instruments.
- To collect and analyse data.
- To contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals and to knowledge exchange activities.
- To make a contribution to the management of this complex and challenging project, as opportunities allow.
The candidate will join a large international team of some 30 researchers, including five other research associates at the University of Glasgow, and would work under the direct supervision of Professor Michele Schweisfurth, Professor of International and Comparative Education.

Standard Terms & Conditions
Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £35,210 - £39,610 per annum.
This post if full time with funding up to the 31 December 2021 in the first instance. You may be required to work up to 6 weeks in your Case Study Country on an ad hoc basis.
New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University’s relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court’s policies.
