Sidewalk Toronto has dedicated a staggering $50 million to the engagement and testing phase of their new tech-driven Quayside development. Naturally, we at PPS can’t help but imagine what would be possible with such a large budget dedicated to community engagement and pilot testing. So we made a list of five items [3] that we would prioritize if we had $50 million!

Streets are the most fundamental component of a city’s urban design, but they are not “timeless blanks”; they must shift and evolve along with the changing needs of the city and its inhabitants. In New York—despite solid efforts in recent years to rethink streets by adding bike lanes, corner curb cuts, and free Wi-Fi stations—we are still playing catch-up. Are our cities watching us? In his work with the NYC Planning Commission in 1969, Holly Whyte used meticulous observation and data collection methods to investigate human activity in the city’s public spaces. But today, machine learning stands to change the in-person foot traffic counts and time-lapse cameras that Whyte used in his pioneering "Street Life Project." With new computer vision technologies that can turn images directly into actionable data, track eyeballs on retail advertisements, and replace all kinds of “analog” urban methods with new digital versions, will this lead to increased adaptability and more “human-focused” design and urban planning? Or, is it an invasion of privacy? (Curbed [7])
