How Short-Term Placemaking Experiments Transformed Philadelphia's University City

University City District [4] (UCD) is not your usual Business Improvement District. While this Philadelphia district management organization was founded 20 years ago to provide public maintenance and safety services, its approach to community and economic development has expanded significantly over time to provide transportation services, host signature events, support neighborhood jobseekers and businesses, and to design, build, and maintain public spaces.

In this guest post on the PPS blog [3], University City District's Nate Hommel and Alissa Weiss reflect on what they've learned—and the community spaces that have emerged—from years of “Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper [5]" placemaking experiments.

Future doctors in Philadelphia are learning how to think like city planners, thanks to a new hybrid university program at Jefferson that combines medical training with design classes. Launched in 2015 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, JeffDESIGN focuses on a broad range of design applications aimed at impacting real people’s health, from 3D printing that will help improve surgery to redesigning the physical space of hospitals. Most importantly, it’s about exploring the ways infrastructure, community, and the built environment can have a positive impact on health. (NextCity [6])

Can trust-building and community engagement battle a rising tide in Louisiana? To date, the Isle de Jean Charles Resettlement Project is the only government-funded climate change relocation in the country—and a test case for more to come. As “omnipresent floodwaters” threaten the housing and accessibility of the island, local members of the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw band of Native Americans have become "America’s first climate refugees.
