Once the cradle of the U.S. automotive industry, Michigan has more recently found itself in another line of business—as a producer of great places [4]. Many placemaking principles [5] have come to define Michigan’s approach to economic revitalization, ranging from participatory planning [6]to the revitalization of underused parks [7] and local markets in Detroit [8]. By making a concerted effort around people-oriented placemaking, Michigan has charted out a brighter and more lively future for its cities.

In the News
November 6 - 12, 2017
  • Long-discussed plans to pedestrianize London’s Oxford Street [9] will finally be put into motion in 2018. A major shopping mecca, the street is also known for its congestion and pollution issues, and currently pedestrians share space with two lanes of traffic–meaning shoppers, tourists, residents, and workers have to vie with hordes of taxis, buses, and bikes. The new proposal [10] will re-route buses and expand taxi ranks, while bringing the road to the same level as the pavement, making it more accessible [11] for wheelchair users. Cyclists, however, are not part of the plan—which many view as a major missed opportunity [12].

  • Thanks to a public land swap between the Port of New Orleans (PNO) and the Public Belt Railroad (PBR), the City of New Orleans may be on track to create the largest stretch of public riverfront in the U.S. [14] The redevelopment and linkage of two existing parks is a key component of the city’s long-term vision [15] to turn its entire riverfront [16] into one contiguous public parkway.
