The Talloires Network E-Newsletter - March 2011
The Talloires Network is one of the partners with whom PASCAL collaborates, and which is a co-signatory to the September 23 2010 Communique "Enhancing North-South Cooperation in Community-University Engagement".
The Network enjoys a high profile and is among the several national and international bodies encouraging universities worldwide to adopt a more centrally-focussed universities' 'third mission' commitment to community service in its different senses and settings.

Update from the Chair: President Larry Bacow
I am pleased to report that the Talloires Network continues to grow steadily in both numbers and diversity. Last month the Talloires Network reached 205 members in 58 countries with a total enrollment of nearly 5.8 million students. Our continued growth demonstrates the momentum of the global movement for engaged universities, as well as the Talloires Network’s prominent place in this movement. Talloires Network passes 200 members The Talloires Network membership now exceeds 200 universities in 58 countries with a total enrollment of almost 6 million students. Our members range from small colleges with a few hundred students to huge universities with hundreds of thousands, from newly-established institutions to universities founded in the Middle Ages. According to Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, Founding President of Aga Khan University and member of our Steering Committee, "The remarkable diversity of institutions in the Talloires Network has enabled its members to learn from each other about the value, importance and methodology of engaging with the communities in which they function." 2011 Magrath University Community Engagement Award
Partnerships, Volume 2 Number 1 Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement recognizes that successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The articles in this peer-reviewed journal focus on how theories and practices can inform and improve such partnerships, connections, and collaborations. The current issue addresses such topics as international service- learning’s impact on host countries, the importance of ethics in cross-cultural service learning relationships, and the power of lessons learned through the cultivation of international civic engagement partnerships. The Talloires Network Global Leaders Conference: "Building the Engaged University, Moving beyond the Ivory Tower" will take place 14-16 June 2011 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. In order to celebrate the five year anniversary of the founding of the Talloires Network, we will gather presidents, vice chancellors and rectors from across the globe, representing the diversity of our 200 member universities from 58 countries. We will strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development. The Global Social Change Leadership Institute at the Research Center for Leadership in Action at NYU Wagner offers university and graduate students and recent college graduates a chance to develop practical knowledge and skills to advance social justice in their communities. Participants learn from experts at the forefront of policy reform and advocacy, coalition building and direct service. The Institute takes place on NYU, where students enjoy easy access to all that New York City has to offer. Students emerge with an understanding of social change leadership, an action plan to address an issue in their school or community, and a network of other advocates committed to social activism. 
Recognition of the outreach and engagement partnership efforts of four-year US public universities the is the goal of the C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Award and the Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award, sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the National Outreach Scholarship Conference. The awards program seeks to identify colleges and universities that have redesigned their learning, discovery, and engagement functions to become even more involved with their communities. In 2011 five universities will receive the Outreach Scholarship which includes a $6,000 prize. One of these will then be selected to receive the C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Award, including a $20,000 prize. Applications are due March 21, 2011. 
The Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD) in collaboration with The Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP) at the University of Brighton and the Sub-Saharan Africa Participatory Research Network (REPAS) are organizing a conference on Community University Partnerships. The conference will take place at UCAD and will be presided over by the Senegalese Head of State, his Excellency President Abdoulaye Wade. The purpose of the conference is to bring together students, scholars, civil society organizations and local communities to exchange experiences and practices of community-university partnership activities with a focus on the Africa region. The conference forms part of a joint British Council funded project on ‘Student Community Engagement for Employability and Entrepreneurship with concrete examples from the Africa Region.’
In partnership between the Centre for Community Based Research (Canada) and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, CU Expo2011 will showcase the exemplars in Community-University partnerships worldwide, and explore and introduce creative ways of strengthening our local communities. Objectives include:
Join community partners, faculty, administrators, and students interested in deepening their understandings and practices of community-higher education partnerships. Through a blend of presentations from the field, plenaries and working sessions, the Institute will explore strategies to address persistent challenges, analyze promising practices, and examine research to advance the study of partnerships. 
In accordance with the increasing awareness of Service-Learning, the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) of Lingnan University, Lingnan Foundation, and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia have joined together to expand Service-Learning programs throughout the Asia-Pacific Region. The conference aims at gathering educators, students, government officials and service providers from around the world to exchange ideas on the development and the role of Service-Learning in making a difference in the society. 
Presidents, rectors, and vice chancellors of Talloires Network member universities will gather in Madrid along with other Network leaders and partners to discuss the next five years of the higher education civic engagement movement. We will strategize about the future of the Network, develop proposals for new projects, assess the current state of civic engagement and social responsibility in higher education and share knowledge about implementing policies and programs that advance human and social development. 
Established by a medical student in 1943, SHAWCO has remained a student-led organization and has grown to over 1700 student volunteers. In 1994 SHAWCO moved from a welfare to a development model - still running primary health care clinics, but moving to skills development and education programs. SHAWCO is divided into two main service sectors: SHAWCO Education and SHAWCO Health. SHAWCO Education addresses significant gaps in the current schooling system by offering after-school and weekend tutoring in a range of subjects to Grade 3-12 learners from disadvantaged areas across the Cape Metropole. SHAWCO Health addresses lack of access to primary health care in our communities by providing mobile medical, health and rehabilitation, health promotion and HIV counseling and testing services to 6 different communities on a weekly basis, and a specialized pediatric clinic on a monthly basis. 
PASCAL International Observatory is an international research and policy development alliance, which aims to develop, discuss and communicate new concepts and emerging ideas about place management, social capital and learning regions. The central theme of the third mission of universities in regional development is one of the pivotal strands of PASCAL. PASCAL's library hosts a range of materials on relevant topics and policy and practice issues.
