  • In discussing the “anti-homelessness strategy” of removing public seating from urban spaces, Allison Arieff shows that the criminalization of seating is just one of many ongoing tactics to exclude certain groups from public spaces—tactics which fail to get at any root causes of the very problems they purport to address. Offering a brief snapshot of similar tools of exclusion throughout U.S. urban history, Arieff also outlines a placemaking strategy by which everyday citizens can begin to take action by making “small gestures that can have a big impact."
