The Creative City is an academic research project which aims to closely examine two creative cities – Glasgow, Scotland and Portland, Oregon – both famed for their creative industries and identities. In advance of the upcoming publication and exhibition of the project, the research team will present general findings as well as considered comparisons of the two cities. Following a general discussion the debate will focus on in-depth themes, including public space and the street, festivals, street food, cafes and riverfronts.
You are invited to attend the public presentation and discussion of ‘The Creative City – a comparison of Glasgow, Scotland and Portland, Oregon’ on Thursday 21 May 2015 from 1600 - 1800 at Glasgow School of Art, 167 Renfrew St, Reid Building, Principal Seminar Room 1, Glasgow G3 6RQ.
The evening will be hosted by Professor Brian Evans, Head of Urbanism at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and Glasgow Urban Lab, and will feature a presentation by Professor Rudolph Barton, GSA Fulbright Professor 2015 and professor of Architecture and Urban Studies at Portland State University. In his 30 years of experience, Professor Barton has worked for numerous organisations in Portland, including the Portland Design Commission and the Regional Culture and Arts Commission. He was also involved in Portland’s groundbreaking Downtown Plan and became co-founder of the Portland State University School of Architecture.
The evening will provide an opportunity to reflect on Glasgow’s past and stimulate discussion around issues significant to Glasgow’s present and future. As such we would like to bring together a wide range of individuals from a variety of organisations to encourage debate on the findings of the research topics.
The event will take place from 4-6pm on the 21st of May in Principal Seminar Room 1 in the Reid Building at the Glasgow School of Art. Refreshments will be provided. Please follow this link to register for the event.
