On UNESCO’s International Day of Education on January 24th, Swansea UNESCO Learning City launched the 2025 Swansea Learning Festival and a new UK Network for UNESCO Learning Cities. 

India plays host to East-West discussions on Lifelong Learning

The Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Kaldy in Kerala, South India has played host to a conference ‘Lifelong Learning for a Sustainable Future: Environment, Economy and Society’ from 6-8 January 2024. The conference brought together scholars, practitioners, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss innovative approaches to promoting sustainable development through lifelong learning initiatives. 

Chair's letter 2024

The year 2024 was exceptional.  PASCAL has grown with the adhesion of two new centres.  In New Brunswick, New Jersey USA, Prof. Radha Jagannathan leads a centre at Rutgers University, a key institution in the greater New York metropolitan region.  This centre promises to improve our understanding of youth education (STEM) and employment issues, with a focus on the design and planning of infrastructure, to strengthen connections between universities and the public sector.  Catherine Lido, Glasgow Centre Director, travelled to New Jersey to attend the launch of the Rutgers Centre.

Place identity and social change | Reflections on a seasonal visit to the Scottish Highlands

I have recently returned from an enjoyable, if rather windswept seasonal break on the coast of the north west Highlands in Scotland. The place we were staying was in a small crofting community at the end of a twisting and hilly single rack road, some 10 miles or so from the nearest village with some shops and public services such as a school, health services, a community centre (and a golf course by the beach).

New open online course, ‘Distributing learning and knowledge creation’

An open online course, ‘Distributing learning and knowledge creation’, aims to set open and distributed education in a broad framework of knowledge equity. Published under a CC licence, universities are free to use, and adapt, the course to build capacity among their staff and others for reducing inequity via distributing education to those who currently miss out.
