Place Management, Social Capital and Learning Regions PASCAL Universities Regional Engagement Project (PURE) ACTION PLAN GABORONE, BOTSWANA July 2009 to December, 2010
1.
July 2009      Establish a formal UB/Gaborone City partnership – e.g. UB Vice Chancellors office to work on the Memorandum of Understanding with the city. Study the regional benchmarking tool and see how it can be used in our context (i.e. promoting the City Plan delivery in the three areas, namely, environmental sustainability; arts and culture; and SME development) – Gabo. Set a project coordination Committee (to reflect a balance of UB and City authorities engaged in the relevant areas of the partnership focus). Committee Chair – Prof Frank Youngman, Deputy Chair – Deputy Mayor; Secretariat- Department of Adult Education. Set up a research committee/an institutions bench marking tool committee (that will reflect a broader institutional picture) - Chair Gabo. Set up a PASCAL 2010 Conference Organizing Committee (Chair: Dr. Modise).

August 2009      Hold an Internal UB workshop: on regional engagement; – to identify specific activities in our three areas of focus, as well as to prepare for their participation on the benchmarking tools. Launch the UB/Gaborone City Partnership. Prepare participation list on the benchmarking tools. Prepare for the sub-cluster meeting. Storan’s visit to see the 2010 PASCAL Conference Venue.

September – October 2009    UB to join a regional cluster. Engage in Sub-cluster activities/meetings. HEI and the City institutions are invited to answer the benchmarking tools.

November – December 2009   Organize a one day seminar to share the conclusions of the benchmarking tools exercise Prepare a summary of the resolutions on “Community engagement” with the sub-themes concerning the University’s: o o o Contribution to the economic development. Arts and cultural development. Environmental sustainability for the Gaborone region.

Place Management, Social Capital and Learning Regions 5. January- February 2010   Start preparing for the second CDG regional (Botswana and Lesotho) visit. Prepare for the Paris OECD workshop in Paris.

March to April 2010     Further use of the bench marking tools in PURE related activities – e.g. for the Mapping exercise. Participate in the Sub-cluster meetings or activities. Write the second PURE regional visit report. Continue preparations for the International Conference.
7.
May – June 2010   Measuring progress and writing of the Draft final report of the Botswana PURE project. Request for the PURE outline template for the PURE final synthesis report.
8.
July to August 2010  Workshop: with all those who were involved in the UB/City Partnership activities to draw the key lessons from this community and regional engagement exercise.
9.
July - October   Preparations for the PASCAL Conference Continue. Prepare the Gaborone region presentation at the PURE – regions meeting to be held in December in Gaborone in conjunction with the PASCAL International Conference.
10. November-December 2010  Host the PASCAL International Conference (1-2 December, 2010).
