South Trans-Danube Region
With a population of a million, South Transdanubia in Hungary is has weaker economic status and limited international trade, which can be attributed to its peripheral and somewhat isolated situation. It is a development regions comprising three counties centred on the historic university City of Pecs, the 2010 European Capital of Culture. Its regional GDP is 22% below the national average, and the overall rate of employment is below 50%, with above average low tech employment. There are transportation and health service deficiencies and a large Roma population entirely reliant on welfare benefits. Some progress has been made on environmental issues.
