Rod Purcell

Currently I am Director of Community Engagement in the School of Education at the University of Glasgow. Previously I have been the Head of the Department of Adult and Continuing Education and leader of the Community Development programmes. My professional background is in community development .

Interests/Expertise:

My research interests are in exploring the interrelationships between the nature of urban space and the quality of life, drawing on a range of perspectives including theories of Everyday Life and Psychogeography.  Linked to this is the re-thinking of community development practice drawing on, and integrating,  a range of perspectives including Gramsci, Freire and North American models of community organising. Currently I am researching a collaborative book on the international application of community organising; comparing experience in North America, India, South Africa and the UK.

A new research interest is in the role of education in the social and community development of post conflict societies. With colleagues I am currently developing a collaborative project within Northern Ireland.

Recent research/consultancy:

Recent research activity has been focussed on:

  • developing experimental practice projects exploring Psychogeographic interpretations of urban space.
  • an analysis of community development practice in the West of Scotland
  • reviewing contested concepts of community in a Scottish town
