Northern Illinois PURE Action Plan
June – December, 2010
PHASE I Tasks
July – August, 2009 TASK Review Regional Visit Report when received and incorporate suggested actions and developments into the Action Plan. Develop six specific strategies identified by the Northern Illinois PURE work group into a package to be presented to the institutional presidents for their consideration. In consultation with the Northern Illinois PURE work group, determine the best method of presenting the potential strategies to the presidents (i.e. face-to-face meeting with the entire group or one-on-one, telephone call, or email) and schedule it. Set meetings to brief the three new community college presidents on the PURE initiative. Share the detailed benchmarking tool with the entire work group to identify volunteers interested in working with NIU on the testing, use, reporting, and further development of the tool. Completed. Deferred. NIU’s judgement is that introduction of this tool would overtax the capabilities of the community college partners. We are proposing to fold benchmarking into the green skills and jobs issue cluster we’re leading. Under consideration. This task permeates the still-unfolding process, however we are still building our collaborative network and this is an evolving effort. Completed. Robinson is leading the Green Jobs cluster. Crawford is leading the Tertiary Cluster
6. Clarify expectations surrounding possible examples of good practice and submit candidates from Northern Illinois.
7. Follow up as appropriate if one or both of our offers to serve as a sub-cluster leader is/are accepted. Incorporate expectations associated with that responsibility, and general participation in the subclusters, into this Action Plan. 8. Explore the potential tie-in of PURE with the CGS 40th Anniversary event to be held December 10-11, 2009, in DeKalb. 9. Establish a date-certain for the second CDG site visit to Northern Illinois (likely target is early February).

September – October, 2009 TASK 1. Launch specific Northern Illinois PURE initiatives approved by presidents. a. Form strategy teams around each initiative. b. Task each team with the creation of an implementation plan. c. Incorporate implementation plan milestones into this Action Plan. 2. Launch a Benchmarking Committee and develop a work plan with deliverables and timeline. Incorporate into this Action Plan. STATUS/NOTES This task was inaugurated; it took a bit longer than anticipated. A report to presidents was sent Oct. 28, 2009, seeking review and endorsement by Dec. 15, 2009. NIU-led formation of strategy teams and implementation plans has commenced. Deferred. To be revisited by strategy teams in connection with implementation plans. NIU is not stressing this component lest we overtax incipient partnerships. This is an unfolding process reliant on situational judgement. Deferred per the above.
3. Participate in sub-clusters. Identify communication methods for sharing information with the larger Northern Illinois PURE work group. November – December, 2009 TASK 1. Convene the entire Northern Illinois PURE work group to report on strategy team progress, benchmarking, “Good Practice” sites. 2. Implement the work plan developed by the Benchmarking Committee. 3. Participate in sub-clusters and report to the work group on progress and developments. 4. Participate in CGS 40th anniversary event. Identify follow-up opportunities for PURE and bring to next meeting of the Northern Illinois PURE work group.
STATUS/NOTES Deferred. An Advisory Committee will be reconstituted in early 2010 when the four PURE projects are activated. See the Presidential Report for detail. Deferred, per above. In process. Scheduled. Participants from all PURE institutions have been invited to participate and the University of Glasgow will be represented. A major session on the evolving role of higher education in regional innovation is on the program. The regional action plan that results from this event will be used to guide future PURE-related projects. In development.

PHASE II Tasks
January – February, 2010 TASK Convene the entire Northern Illinois PURE work group to report on strategy team progress, benchmarking, follow-up opportunities from the CGS 40th Anniversary event. Host the second CDG site visit. Convene the Northern Illinois HEI presidents and the work group to report on the second CDG site visit and overall progress, challenges, and opportunities. Adjust the Action Plan as needed. Explore inclusion of at least one additional University in the PURE project. STATUS/NOTES February 1-2, 2010
