The Thames Gateway region (TG), population 1.6 million, stretches for 40 miles east from inner East London on both sides of the River Thames and along the Thames Estuary. It comprises sections of 16 different local government districts in three of the nine English Regions (South East, East and London). TG is a designated national priority for regeneration and economic growth with much brownfields land. TG includes the Olympic Park for the 2012 Games. Regeneration was at the heart of the Games bid and remains a core legacy objective; the region contains some of the most deprived wards in the country. Noticeable issues include housing affordability, and high levels of social housing, lone parents and immigration. The communities are very diverse in terms of race and faith, Economic downturn is now a concern. There are skill gaps and health deficiencies, and problems with land contamination but also protected areas of high environmental interest.
