A preview of the upcoming PIMA Bulletin No 22

A commentary on PIMA Bulletin 21 by Chris Duke

PASCAL Observatory’s 2018 International Conference in Suwon, Korea was a beehive of lively learners and lively ideas. PASCAL interest in place and learning cities is neatly captured by Waltraut Ritter’s reflection in PIMA Bulletin No. 21 on visiting Suwon City itself:

Do we really need democracy?

This is one of the extracts from PIMA Bulletin 18, the whole of which can be found at this link.

Mugabe Ratshikuni says China has shown that state-driven development is possible without it.

As we were celebrating Freedom Day over the long weekend in typically South African fashion, over a braai and some decent red wine, I had the opportunity to have a discussion with a gentleman who I had just met, on the crucial link between democracy and development which left me with much food for thought.

PIMA Bulletin18

This attached PIMA Bulletin 18 sustains the theme ‘What is happening to democracy’ by means of a challenging paper from South Africa’s Mugabe Ratshikuni who asks, only slightly tongue in cheek, whether we really need it. We return to that subject in the next issue, and invite responses to both Mugabe and Chris Brooks. We will likely also return to the subject ‘What has happened to lifelong learning’ in the next issue, after a five-part discussion in previous issue (No. 17). Comments are welcome there also.

PIMA Bulletin 16

Please find attached PIMA Bulletin No 16. It continues the bimonthly number-run postings of the PIMA Newsletter. The name-change represents a rationalisation of what the PASCAL member association adds to the Website without duplicating mainstream entries.

Progress on the Big Tent Communique VI

The 4th and near-final iteration of the Big Tent Communique VI is to be printed and translated for discussion and adoption at the end of the 12th PASCAL Conference in Catania next month. The theme is Local Identities and Global Citizenship: the Challenge for Universities.

There is still an opportunity to review and contribute to this process now through the Big Tent Communique VI discussion forum on the Outside The Box (OTB) site. Here you can find the net text and post your advice.
