Knowledge Cities Summit

The Knowledge Cities Summit, held in Melbourne last week, was an important opportunity for academics, government and business to talk with each other about the emerging features of economic and social development, and the ways in which different kinds of knowledge contribute. As the ‘new club of Paris’ would say, it is the challenge of developing with the unlimited resources which knowledge offers.

Framework Service Contract of the European Parliament

PASCAL Observatory is a member of a the Consortium set up and led by our partners Research voor Beleid in the Netherlands that is the sole selected party for the Framework Service Contract LOT2 of the European Parliament (Tender No IP/B/CULT/FWC/2010-001). The framework concerns research and consultancy services for implementation of European policies on education. It concerns all educational sectors except higher education. The duration of the contract is one year, with the possibility of extension of a further 4 years.

Investing in Human and Social Capital: New Challenges

Ministers of Education met last week in Paris (Nov 4 - 5, 2010). The Chair's summary lacks, as it is usual, any specific details.

On the positive side, the document emphasizes trust instead of competition, and education as a public good rather than a private (or mixed) one. It also stresses that the benefits of education go beyond the economic returns and include civic engagement and participation as well as tolerance.

Cultural and creative industries in the PURE project

A presentation, entitled Cultural and creative industries in the PURE project was presented on behalf of the PURE project by Dr Muir Houston as part of a roundtable at the Joint Conference of the University Network of the European Capitals of Culture and Compostela Group of Universities entitled  'Inclusion through Education and Culture', held at the University of Pécs on 14-15 October 2010. We can assure you that Dr Houston is in the photograph!
