EU, Russia & the US: What's Happening in Syria!?
On 30 September 2015 Russian Air Space Forces commenced intensive bombing campaign in Syria, this marking the beginning of a new phase in the war against the so-called ‘Islamic State’ (IS). Russia’s active involvement in the Syrian War combined with looming refugee crisis in Europe and the heighten fear of widespread terror campaign, highlighted by the downing of the Russian Metro Jet airliner and Paris attacks, has compelled western nations to seek a more robust approach towards their protracted campaign against the IS. Yet, the growing stand-off between Russia and Turkey over the downing of the Russian war plane shows complexities and challenges of developing a consolidated strategy in defeating the IS.
