The Talloires Network E-Newsletter - February 2019

The Talloires Network is one of the partners with whom PASCAL collaborates. The Network enjoys a high profile and is among the several national and international bodies encouraging universities worldwide to adopt a more centrally-focussed universities' 'third mission' commitment to community service in its different senses and settings.

Dear Colleagues,

The Talloires Network is a model for what international cooperation can achieve for our institutions as its members actively share best practices and promising strategies in civic engagement, and develop novel projects that leverage insights of participants from different backgrounds.
 
The annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship is an important mechanism for identifying groundbreaking university-community partnerships around the globe. Since 2009 and in partnership with the MacJannet Foundation, the Secretariat has awarded 41 prizes to members in 23 countries. The prize provides financial support and recognizes exceptional student leadership and community impact in such areas as public health, education, and human rights. I encourage you to learn about the previous winners and invite you to submit a nomination.

The Secretariat also welcomes nominations for student leaders to serve on the Steering Committee for a 2-year term, commencing June 2019. Elected student representatives will advise on strategic decisions and serve as a Network ambassador, with a focus on elevating the student voice in these activities. We have benefited greatly from the significant contributions of Abigail Gómez (Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico) and Mapendo Mindje (University of Rwanda, Rwanda). We thank them for their commitment and service to their campus communities and to the Talloires Network.

Last month I had the opportunity to visit both India and Rwanda. Throughout my travels I shared my experience as Steering Committee Chair with leaders of higher education, government, philanthropy, and industry. It is a tremendous honor to represent the Network and promote our common ideals and goals of civic engagement and social responsibility. As we move forward in coming months to co-create a new name and emblem for the Network, I invite you to participate in a short online survey to share your experiences of the Network with the Secretariat.

Host The Next Talloires Network Leaders Conference!

Submit an Expression Of Interest form to host the next Talloires Network Leaders Conference! Our previous global conferences—Madrid 2011, Cape Town 2014, Veracruz 2017—have brought together higher education leaders, students, and community members from various regions of the world to exchange ideas and practices. TNLC2020 will aim to realize these goals, while focusing particular attention to strengthening and expanding the global university civic engagement movement. Accepting Nominations

The MacJannet Prize was established by the Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation to recognize exceptional student community engagement initiatives at Talloires Network Engaged Member universities and contributes financially to their ongoing public service efforts. This year's prize will include criteria that encourages program leaders to describe ways in which their engagement activities are contributing to one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Accepting Nominations for Students to Serve on TN Steering Committee
The TN is seeking two outstanding student leaders to serve on its Steering Committee for a 2-year term, commencing June 2019. As a representative, students will collaborate with university leaders to support the continued development of the Network. Nominations should be submitted to [email protected] and should include the student's name, home university, contact information and resume or CV. Nominations are due 28 February.

The Talloires Network Renaming Initiative is an inclusive and participatory process to engage stakeholders and co-create a new name and emblem that embodies our collective mission.

Denison a Top Program for Teach America
Teach for America has announced that Denison University is a top provider of talent for the program, which develops and supports a diverse network of leaders around the nation. Denison President Adam Weinberg said, “The work of colleges is to prepare students to be engaged citizens in a democratic society. Nothing is more important than the work we do through education. We are exceptionally proud of our students who are committing themselves to Teach for America.” Learn more.

 

 

IBA University in Sukkur hosts a two-day ‘Youth Innovation Event’
IBA University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui, described the programme as a beneficial platform for youth to showcase their innovative ideas and attract potential sponsors and partners. “Our mission and vision is to serve society by ensuring provision of quality education for youths, especially the 'have-nots,'” he said. University of British Columbia in Partnership to Improve Health Care for Indigenous Women
Research from UBC and Western University, developed in collaboration with indigenous elders and advisers, finds that the health of indigenous women recovering from the trauma of partner violence improves when the healing process integrates elder-led circles and other cultural elements. Learn more.

 

 

University of Cape Town - Time for a New Kind of Learning
Vice-Chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng contributed to a discussion at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, examining the question: What values, behaviours and skills must be taught to the new generation so they become responsible citizens in life and work? Phakeng, opening the discussion, said that for her the need for a new kind of learning predated talk about the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Learn more.

Book: Embedding Service-Learning in European Higher Education, Developing a Culture of Civic Engagement 

Embedding Service-Learning in European Higher Education promotes service-learning as a pedagogical approach that develops civic engagement within higher education. It both describes and assesses the most recent developments and contextual positioning of service-learning in European higher education. It also considers if and how pedagogy is responding to European Union policy, and the strategies of higher education institutions towards engagement with broader societal issues. The book is due for publication May 2019. Learn more

 

 

Book: Knowledge for Social Change
Employing history, social theory, and a detailed contemporary case study, Knowledge for Social Change argues for fundamentally reshaping research universities to function as democratic, civic, and community-engaged institutions dedicated to advancing learning and knowledge for social change. Publication: Kettering Foundation, Higher Education Exchange 

The 2018 edition of the Higher Education Exchange focuses on a research question that has structured much of the foundation’s work during the last year: How can an organization come to align itself with a democratic citizenry? Many of the articles in this issue of the Higher Education Exchange focus on how organizational structures work with citizens and community partners to be collaborative rather than controlling. This issue of the Higher Education Exchange aims to demonstrate the possibilities of alignment between citizens and higher education institutions. Learn more
