Public Space News

US Surgeon General Issues Advisory on Loneliness. The US Surgeon General has issued a warning about the dangers of loneliness, which affects one in five adults in the country, and can lead to a higher risk of developing chronic health conditions including depression and dementia. The Surgeon General has called for increased efforts to address loneliness such as promoting community programs that bring people together. While public spaces were not mentioned in this article, the full advisory report includes social infrastructure as a key pillar for increasing trust between people and decreasing social isolation. (The Guardian)

The Lack of Diversity in Land-Use Planning. A recent report from the nonprofit Urban Institute examines who makes decisions about urban planning in the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the US. The authors found that land-use boards are overrepresented by white residents, men, homeowners, and real estate or planning professionals. This could be a factor contributing to long-standing issues in the country such as insufficient affordable housing and segregation. (Urban Institute)

Project for Public Spaces in Dayton, Ohio. Our team recently kicked off visioning sessions for Courthouse Square in downtown Dayton. Together with local organizations, we brainstormed ways to make the area more inviting and enjoyable for everyone. Some possibilities include adding green spaces, art installations, outdoor seating areas, and bringing in food trucks. Our main objective is to make this public space more welcoming and encourage people to enjoy their downtown. (Dayton Daily News)
