Cities Programme Update, October 2017

The UN Global Compact Cities Programme Update looks at Habitat III outcomes, especially in relation to the New Urban Agenda derived from the Sustainable Development Goals. Over 70 countries met recently in New York for a Leaders Summit. Cities in Crisis, especially those with recent natural disasters, has also been a focus topic of programmes around the world. Contact can be made with Urban Scholars attached to the Programme to access their expertise, and read PASCAL Chair Josef Konvitz's article in "Resilience Matters...".  Forthcoming events, such as the World Urban Forum 9, 7-17 February 2018, Kuala Lumpur are detailed.

This update marks yet another quarter of terrific collaborative activity. It is a year since the world gathered together in Quito, Ecuador for Habitat III. The momentum has not been lost, partnerships are forming in many countries around concrete, local actions for the SDGs and New Urban Agenda. Many have reconvened for the UN Global Goals Week in New York. I enjoyed meeting with all of the Global Compact Local Networks at the Leaders Summit. The Networks represent so many of the private sector organisations across the world committed to achieving global sustainability. We look forward to working with them over the coming months and years to achieve multi partner sustainable development projects in cities.

A big highlight of the New York trip was meeting our new partners from the University of São Paulo (USP) and our partners from Paraná. Congratulations to USP Rector, Dr Marco Antonio Zago for this commitment and to Rosane de Souza for all that she has achieved in Brazil over the last four years. With Rosane now joined by Patricia Iglecias and supported by the USP team and Paraná partners, Brazil will be unstoppable. Elizabeth will be in São Paulo later this month for the formal opening of the office.

In Australia, meeting with our first cities for our 'Cities Partnerships' two year capacity development program has been another highlight for 2017. Thank you to Joana Correia for all her hard work and support bringing this initial pilot together. We look forward to the formal global launch of 'City Partnerships' at WUF 9 in Kuala Lumpur in February 2018 and encourage you all to start planning for the Malaysian gathering.

In finishing, on a more sombre note, these last couple of months have been very hard for a number of our cities. Communities across Puerto Rico and Mexico have experienced terrible natural disasters. Recovery is going to take a long time and we encourage all to provide support where possible.

Michael Nolan.
Chair, UN Global Compact - Cities Programme.

Cities in crisis

Puerto Rico's hurricane devastation

Following three devastating hurricanes (the last one, Maria the worst in 85 years), the whole island of Puerto Rico now has the immense challenge of recovery and rebuilding. First priority is getting food and water to citizens, the island has been without power and water for weeks. We understand mayors of the many municipalities are carrying immense loads. We encourage all to provide support where possible.
