• 9 Oct  17.30 - 19.00   "British Aid: a conscience soother or a moral and economic imperative?"
  Michael Mccann (Member of International Development Select Committee and MP East Kilbride, Strathaven & Lesmahagow)
  Britain spends £7.8 billion a year on International Development and that figure is set to rise as the Government works to meet its target to spend 0.7% of Britain’s income on the poorest countries on the planet.
• 6 Nov  17.30 - 19.00  "The Neglected Diseases of the Bottom Billion - picking the low hanging fruit"
  Professor David Molyneux (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine)
  The lecture will discuss the evolution of the concept of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and the rationale for prioritising these diseases in the landscape of Global Health.

Food Security 2012: Working Towards a Sustainable Future
Thursday 27th September 2012, Central London, 09:00 - 16:10 

The production of sustainable food and protecting the future of the global climate has now become a key priority for the government and industries alike.  A report by the Environmental Audit Committee published on May 13th 2012, Sustainable Food, stated that the UK does not have the science base to develop more sustainable food production.  In response to this the Technology Strategy Board will provide £75 million investment over the next five years to boost technological developments to enhance food security.
 
With this in mind, join other industry experts and academics at our forthcoming Food Security forum.  This forum will allow delegates to examine the issues of both UK and global food security, and how we can build sustainability into the system and feed the global population in the face of climate change and population growth.

Global Health Academy annual conference: "Building the evidence base for global health interventions" (Registration now open!)

This conference will be day 1 of a two part series on Making a difference: Establishing evidence, Measuring Impact, and Monitoring Progress.  The solutions to many of the world's health challenges are in the world already - just not in the right place or in the right hands.  Often it is those who are disempowered, the marginalised or those working in other discourses who have solutions to questions that we are asking.  The task ahead for Global Health is to reframe and rethink intractable problems based on a range of "unexpected" evidence emerging from local and global partners.  This first day will explore how evidence already gathered from diverse fields can be translated into change (Day 2 will be held in the spring 2013).

BBSRC Research Community Roadshows:  Glasgow, Tuesday 20 November
BBSRC has announced the dates and locations of a series of roadshow meetings across the UK this autumn where senior staff will review progress in delivering BBSRC’s current Strategic Plan and consider opportunities for the future with delegates from our research and user communities.  The meetings, entitled ‘A conversation with the research community’, will involve short presentations from Chief Executive, Douglas Kell; newly appointed Director of Science, Melanie Welham; and Director of Innovation and Skills, Celia Caulcott.  Each meeting will include a discussion forum, together with the opportunity to meet these and other senior managers.  For information on how to register to attend see http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/news/events/2012-research-community-roadshows.aspx
