New Regional Office for PASCAL in South Africa

On 2 June 2010, Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal of the University of Glasgow, in the presence of the South African High Commissioner to the UK, Dr Zola Skweyiya, the South African Honorary Consul in Scotland, Brian Filling and Professor Michael Osborne, Co-director of PASCAL, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of South Africa (UNISA), establishing a fourth regional office of PASCAL.

Based in Pretoria, the African regional office will be directed by Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers. Professor Hoppers remarked:

I am extremely pleased...actually thrilled that this has happened.

Professor Muscatelli said he was delighted to sign the MOU:

Building our international links is key to our strategic direction and in welcoming a top university like University of South Africa to PASCAL, we are not only strengthening the scope and reach of this excellent initiative, but are further enhancing the name and reputation of the University. I wish the PASCAL project continuing success.

The High Commissioner and Honorary Consul confirmed that there will now be follow-up meetings from education officials at the High Commission in London to explore other areas of collaboration.

A further ceremony will be held at UNISA in Pretoria on 29 November 2010 attended by members of the PASCAL Executive Steering Group, including all co-directors of PASCAL.

Professor Hoppers will be one of the keynote speakers at the next PASCAL conference which takes place in Gaborone, Botswana from 30 November to 2 December 2010.
