The power of adult learning can only be fully realized through a shared global vision. If we are to achieve a more inclusive, sustainable world, we must examine the progress made thus far in the field of adult learning and education and find ways to respond to the outstanding challenges, taking into account local and regional context.

More than 700 local government representatives from over 80 countries across the world attended UNESCO’s third International Conference on Learning Cities in Cork, Ireland. The conference brought together key city stakeholders to share and discuss their experiences and identify good practice in using education and learning as drivers of sustainable development.
 

Six scholars representing six different countries have completed their research at UIL within the scope of the Institute's scholarship programme. The aim of the CONFINTEA Research Scholarship Programme is to support researchers from across the globe to effectively monitor and coordinate the follow-up process of CONFINTEA VI (the 6th International Conference on Adult Education). The scholars’ research stay at UIL in September coincided with the build-up to the CONFINTEA VI Mid-Term Review which takes place in late October in Suwon, Republic of Korea.

A special issue of the International Review of Education – Journal of Lifelong Learning (IRE) looks at language rights, linguistic diversity, and the role of language learning programmes in ensuring the social inclusion of potentially marginalized groups in the European Union.
