Update from the Chair: President Mark Gearan

I am very pleased to announce that the heads of our member institutions have voted overwhelmingly to approve the Steering Committee candidates put forward by the nominations committee. The new Steering Committee members bring incredible experience and commitment to the Network, and I look forward to working with them as we promote greater engagement by universities with their communities.

New Talloires Network Steering Committee members

Following a process of selection by a nominations committee, a slate of candidates was presented to the heads of our member universities for a vote to approve or reject the nominees. Over 95% of those who voted approved the nominees. We are pleased to present the new members of our Steering Committee. Meet the Steering Committee>>

Youth Economic Participation Initiative update

We are making good progress developing the Youth Economic Participation Initiative, working in collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation, aiming to launch this global program of university-community demonstration projects in mid-2012. Many thanks to the Network members who have contributed ideas and recommendations to this effort. We are currently securing input from university students and other youth around the world. 10 student interviewers from Network universities are gathering information from 100 young people, and we are organizing two online dialogues of youth advisors. We are being assisted with youth participation in planning the Initiative by DeCode, Canadian specialists in youth civic participation, employment and social media. Rob Hollister to work with Chilean universities

Professor Rob Hollister, Talloires Network Secretariat, is headed to Chile in early November to work with Network member institutions.  He will meet with universities that are participating in our small grants and capacity-building program supported by Walmart Foundation and operated in collaboration with Corporación Participa, a leader in the promotion of democratic values and civil society.  Professor Hollister will meet with rectors of Network members, the Chilean Director of Santander Universities, and Wal-Mart  representatives. In addition, he will speak at a meeting of the Metropolitan Coalition for Social Responsibility and Equality hosted by Mónica Jimenez de la Jara, founding member of the Network Steering Committee and former Chilean Minister of Education. Hollister notes, “I look forward to learning more about the impressive social responsibility programs of Chilean universities and to sharing this information with the rest of the Network.”

Opportunities

Opportunity for members interested in environmental issues
The Talloires Network invites members to participate in a conversation and informal working group on environmental policy.  This initiative responds to the interest that several members have expressed in exchanging with others on specific topics within their broader civic engagement work. It aims to support partnership among universities with environmental programs - fostering exchange about common challenges and experiences they have encountered in promoting civil engagement and social responsibility through environmental projects and programs. The group may also explore opportunities for joint activity.

The mission of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (JHEOE) is to serve as the premier peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal to advance theory and practice related to all forms of outreach and engagement between higher education institutions and communities. This issue of the journal expands on issues and ideas raised at the 2010 National Outreach Scholarship Conference, the theme of which was "Sustaining Authentic Engagement." Read this issue>>

2011 IARSLCE Annual Conference. "Research for Impact: Scholarship Advancing Social Change." Chicago, Illinois (USA). 2-4 November 2011.
The conference will highlight research that critically evaluates and illuminates the long-term impact of service-learning and community engagement on students, faculty, and community partners and, most importantly, on the social, economic and political issues they seek to transform. The conference will provide dynamic venue for scholarship that articulates how, when, where and why service-learning and community engagement influence critical issues locally, nationally and globally. Veteran, new and emerging scholars from diverse backgrounds and settings will exhibit the highest quality research that advances both the understanding and practice of collaboratively engaging students, educators, and community partners in advancing social change. Service-Learning Director Leadership Institute, Roanoke, Virginia (USA), 28 February - 1 March 2012

Clinton Global Initiative-University 2012 Conference. Washington, DC, 30 March - 1 April 2012

Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting where students, national youth organizations, topic experts, and public figures discuss solutions to pressing global issues. CGI U 2012 will be held at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Bard Palestinian Youth Initiative at Bard College (USA), 2011 MacJannet Prize 3rd Place Winner

The BPYI is a student-run program that works to build civil society in the West Bank. Through a variety of activities, Bard students and staff contribute to the creation of a viable and sustainable Palestinian state. The BPYI was founded in 2008 by a Palestinian student at Bard through the Trustee Leader Scholar Program, which supports students who design and run civic engagement projects based on their own interests. Students from Bard have traveled to the West Bank village of Mas’ha each summer and initiated workshops to encourage self expression, ran summer educational camps for girls and boys, taught English classes to adults, took young Palestinians on a trip to Yad Vashem (the Holocaust Museum in Israel), organized a huge children’s festival, and built the first children’s library in the West Bank. Provided by Learn and Serve America, the Clearinghouse is a comprehensive resource on service-learning. Resources found on the Clearinghouse include tool kits, webinars, and sample service-learning syllabi. These resources are geared toward a US audience, but can be adapted for a variety of contexts.
