This Week's Highlights: July 17 - 23, 2017
  • Two provocative articles in the LA Times this week (here and here) explore the role of developers (and coffee!) in the conversations around gentrification in two local neighborhoods. In both cases, it’s clear that a lack of sensitivity to the needs of the existing community is a major issue for residents. What are your thoughts?
  • It was a scorcher in NYC this week, so in honor of summer, a nostalgic look at the history of Playstreets—a cherished summer institution in neighborhoods across NYC for over a century, where city blocks are closed to cars and transformed into kid and pedestrian-friendly play zones (Streets as Places at its finest!). Today these events are being phased out in favor of more structured “play” experiences, and this year there will be just 15, down from 40 in 2016 and 150 two decades ago.

Freiburg, Germany
A great market town on the edge of the Black Forest, Freiburg is a city of many virtues—compact, walkable, easily accessible by a fabulous tram system. A great model for a mid-sized city. Be sure to check out Fred Kent's Instagram shots at pps_placemaking.
