PNU hosts SUEUAA international forum

The Philippine Normal University through the Linkages and International Office (LIO) hosted the International Forum on Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Africa and Asia last 28-29 August 2018.

This international forum gathered some 80 researchers, educators and community engagement experts and practitioners from various universities, government and non-government agencies to discuss best practices in urban engagement and extension programs. The forum reaffirmed the roles of the universities in addressing and responding to the needs of the local community.

The Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Asia and Africa (SUEUAA) project is funded by the British Academy under the Cities and Infrastructure programme of its Global Challenges Research Fund.  The project, led by the University of Glasgow, includes six international partners from Iran, Iraq, the Philippines, South Africa and is a collaborative study between University of Glasgow (Scotland), and Universities in Iran (University of Kurdistan), Iraq (University of Duhok), the Philippines (Philippine Normal University), Zimbabwe (University of Harare), Tanzania (University of Dar-es-Salaam), and South Africa (University of Johannesburg). Your are cordially invited to a forum in Manila on 28 August at which emerging outcomes of this project will be disseminated. There is no fee for this event and further details are attached.

PASCAL Briefing Paper 17 - A benchmarking approach to understanding community engagement and learning cities

The development of a learning city requires city leaders to build a complex partnership with a potentially large number of stakeholders in city institutions, business and civic society. Of the wide variety of measurement tools available to cities to gain some understanding of their strategy needs and performance, the paper argues that a benchmarking approach, using a mixture of qualitative self-assessment supported by some qualitative data offers the most fruitful approach to assess the strengths and weaknesses of policy and practice, and offers a guide to prioritising actions.

SUEUAA (Strengthening Urban Engagement in Universities in Asia and Africa) - two new Working Papers

The SUEUAA (Strengthening Urban Engagement in Universities in Asia and Africa) project funded by the British Academy looks at the role of the University in developing sustainable solutions to issues in six cities across six different countries: Harare (Zimbabwe), Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), Johannesburg (South Africa), Manilla (Philippines), Duhok (Iraq), and Sanandaj (Iran).

Strengthening Urban Engagement of Universities in Africa and Asia - an Update

Mike Osborne and Kasia Borokowska were very pleased to be able to represent the SUEUAA project at the second meeting in London on 19 June of projects funded with the British Academy's Cities and Infrastructure Programme with the Global Challenges Research Programme. We were joined by representatives of other projects, each reporting on their progress. It became very evident that much synergy exists within the programme, and we were very pleased to be approached by colleagues from Mexico interested in joining our project.

Seminars at Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Learning - 17 March 2018

PASCAL Director for Europe, Mike Osborne, and PASCAL Associate Director for Europe, Roberta Piazza, were delighted to be hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Learning (SMILE) and its director Professor Jian Huang from 15-18 March 2018. During that time, they discussed a number of areas of potential collaboration including assessment of the regional engagement role of Technical and Vocational Education Colleges in Shanghai.

Promoting Community Engagement for Vocational and Professional Education and Training - Hong Kong, 15 March 2018

This symposium on 15 March 2018 at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) discussed findings of two research studies. One was benchmarking research conducted in Hong Kong and European cities and the second, a General Research Fund (GRF) study[1] concerned the importance of partnerships and community engagement for Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET).

The Institute for Education Policy, the Division of Public Safety Leadership and the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University are pleased to host the 15th International Workshop/Conference on Higher Education Reform (HER). This will be the latest in a series of international workshops, inaugurated by the University of British Columbia (Canada) in 2003, with a focus on research investigating various aspects of policy reforms and other major changes in higher education. 

Workshop for VTC staff members on Promoting Community Engagement for VPET

We were very pleased to be able to offer a PASCAL Workshop at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan) (a member of Vocational Training Council (VTC)) to some 40 staff members on Promoting Community Engagement for Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) on 13 March 2018.
