Joanne R. Dempsey is project co-director for the NIU/PASCAL efforts in South Africa to build a collaborative model for economic development through economic and entrepreneurship education. Prior to this work, Dempsey served as President and Executive Director of Econ Illinois for 17 years.  Econ Illinois is part of Northern Illinois University’s Division of Outreach, Engagement and Information Technology, and  is an affiliate of the national Council for Economic Education. 

A national and state leader in economic education for over 35 years, Ms. Dempsey has been the recipient of national awards for excellence in economic education, is the Past-President of the National Association of Economic Educators and has served as a consultant to state and national organizations on standards and benchmarking.  She has authored curriculum materials for economics and personal finance education, as well as a handbook for economic education centers.

Ms. Dempsey has been active in economic education internationally through the national Council for Economic Education’s EconomicsInternational program, working with economic educators in Eastern Europe, Mexico, South America, Indonesia, and South Africa.
