Food security and water

Dear Colleagues,

Within the frame of the PASCAL policy theme "Green Skills" I would like to introduce a research group from Germany (located in Potsdam, a little town near Berlin).

We try to develop solutions for a more sustainable use of water within agriculture worldwide. We are going to test solutions with a modelling system after implementing food (and climate) scenarios. Our guiding research question is: To what extent will water demand for food production increase due to growing global population, climbing incomes, rising urbanization and the associated increase in shares of food production of animal provenance and other water-intensive food products?

We are working on farm level and are actually developing a `test farm´ based on data from Germany and Wisconsin (USA). It would be nice to get in contact with other people who

  • are interested to join our (still) small network,
  • deal with sustainable environmental footprint on farm scale (cradle to farm gate) and think about scaling up the results to regions, and maybe have knowledge about local applied measures to raise water productivity within lifestock farming and within plant production.

You might wish to take a look at our webpage.

Regards,

Katrin
