Random Reflections for the Month of August, 2014

Here is another round of it for your perusal:

Maximum Governance of BRICS

The sixth Summit of heads of state/government from 5 BRICS countries is taking place today at Fartaleza, Brasil. The Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is attending his first multi-lateral meeting of this club of large economies outside the OECD. In the course of this Summit, the leaders of Brasil, China, Russia, India and South Africa are moving towards creating two new global financial institutions.

“Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Work with All, For Development of All)

In his inaugural address to the 16th Lok Sabha on June 9, 2014, the President Shri Pranab Mukherjee described the thrust of the new government in this principle—“Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”. The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, while speaking in the parliament on the motion of thanks to the President’s address on June 11, 2014, appealed to the nation that development should be a people’s movement.

Random Reflections for the Month of May, 2014

On the occasion of May Day, here is another set of random reflections for your perusal:

Governance of Manifestos

At election time, most political parties prepare manifestos defining their priorities if they get elected. Manifestos have become as much a part of democratic elections as banners, candidates and campaigns. In the largest democracy of the world, political parties have generally been very casual about their poll manifestos over the past decades.

Governance of Electoral Democracy

Global expansion of democracy has come to be associated with the ‘right to vote’ to elect the representatives who form the government every 4 or 5 years. Many countries around the world are now electoral democracies, though not necessarily substantive democracies.

Seminar on “Community Engagement in Higher Education” and launch of the GUNi World Report 5 on Higher Education

On the 5th of March’ 2014, a seminar on “Community Engagement in Higher Education”, was held at the Planning Commission in New Delhi. The Seminar witnessed participation from the academia, government and NGOs.

Making Engagement Relevant in Higher Education

“We listen to public, and they have a say in setting the research agenda. After all, universities undertake research with public funds; they must be accountable to the public”. Such were the sentiments expressed during three dialogues on ‘strengthening community engagement in higher education in India’ during March 3-7, 2014.

Governance of Everyday Life

A young boy from a north-eastern province was beaten to death in Delhi recently. Young girls from that region of India have been facing harassment and violence on the streets of Delhi for long. Discrimination, ill-treatment and harassment are faced by domestic maids in middle class homes of Delhi regularly. Abusive language is used against rickshaw-pullers by those driving a motorcycle or car to push them off the road and make the way.
