Talking with Mayors

John Tibbitt, PASCAL Vice-chair for policy engagement, contributed to a recent study visit to Glasgow by Mayors from the cities around Tampere in Finland.  The focus for much of the visit, hosted by the European Policies Research Centre (EPRC) at Strathclyde University, was on the effective use of European Structural Funds.

The report “At the Heart of the City: Mayors on the Urban Future” (featured below) encompasses the captivating discussion that occurred during the Mayors Roundtable at the World Urban Forum 6 held in September 2012 in Naples, Italy.

Attended by 400 Mayors and Local Authority Associations, topics such as the financial architecture in countries, job creation strategies, women and youth empowerment and the need for an improved partnership between Ministers and Mayors were passionately debated.

Scenario Planning for Scotland 2025 - a world-leading learning nation

The reports from a programme of work by Scotland's Future Forum and the Goodison Group in Scotland were launched at a gathering in the Scottish Parliament on 4th February.   The programme had involved a series of seminars, roundtable discussions and workshops with a wide range of stakeholder groups across all stages of education, business, the voluntary sector and young people to provide an evidence base.  PASCAL had participated in a workshop bringing together international perspectives as part of this process. 

New directions for work in digital Scotland

The Scottish Futures Forum hosted the final seminar in a 4-part series sponsored by the Scottish Universities Insight Institute (SUII) at the Scottish Parliament on 19th November, bringing together academics, practitioners, businesses and policy-makers to take stock  of the discussions in earlier sessions and suggest priorities for 'next steps' in maximising the opportunities for Scotland from developing digital technologies.

Strengthening PASCAL's on-line presence

PASCAL's on-line networks continue to grow.  In the last week PASCAL passed a couple of milestones - there are now over 500 Twitter followers worldwide ( http://twitter.com/obspascal )and over 100 people and organisations have 'liked' the PASCAL Facebook page  (http://facebook.com/Pascalobservatory ) .

It's easy now to catch up with the topics PASCAL has featured on Twiiter.  Visit our new page at www.twylah.com/obspascal . Updated daily, the page highlights issues organised according  to the main PASCAL themes.

This much improved guide is attractive and informative, and keeps topics in view for much longer than OBSERVATIONS Weekend, which is now discontinued.

Regional policy priorities

PASCAL is anxious to ensure that it is addressing those topics within its remit which are of most relevance and priority to regional stakeholders.  By way of an experiment, there is now a PASCAL poll seeking views on the most pressing social policy problems faced by regions in 2012.  The poll question can be found at www.twtpoll.com/fou3ak.  Please vote.  The poll is open for the next 7 days.

Paper.li features PASCAL: Global ideas for local communities

Paper.li, one of the leading companies producing on-line newspapers, has featured PASCAL's social media practice in the latest blog on their website.  Whilst many of the papers they produce are for individuals or for businesses, they were interested in PASCAL's use of the papers as an international organisation.
