This lecture is presented as part of the Media, Communication and Democracy: Global and National Environments conference, an international conference at RMIT University (31 August-02 September 2011) examining the complex relationship between media and democracy and exploring the implications for democratic processes of the growing power of media owners. The conference is hosted by the European Union Centre at RMIT, with the School of Media and Communication (RMIT) and the Media and Democracy in Eastern Europe Research Project (MDCEE) at the University of Oxford, UK.
