Update from the Chair: President Mark Gearan
As I reflect on the Talloires Network and its growing membership, I am reminded of the critical role that the Network seeks to play in generating financial resources for the support of civic engagement in higher education, both for its members and more broadly. To date, the Talloires Network has sought to serve two main functions in the funding arena. First, it strives to cultivate funding for its members and activities of its Secretariat. Through programs like the Youth Economic Participation Initiative and Ciudadanía Activa (see article below), the Talloires Network tries to support the excellent civic and community engagement work of its member institutions. We also pursue another goal – to encourage private and public funders to increase how much they invest in higher education civic engagement work around the world. The collective voice of university leaders has great potential in this regard; working together, we advocate the importance and value of investing in the “third mission” of universities. In keeping with this commitment, this July, the Steering Committee members will participate in a roundtable with funders to encourage continued support, and stimulate new support, for this critical dimension of higher education. Generating funding for the community engagement work being undertaken by Talloires Network members is a key priority and challenge. What thoughts do you have on strategies that the Talloires Network can employ to expand financial resources for the engaged university movement?
