Dear Colleagues,

Last month, I was part of a panel conversation at the Global University Engagement Summit at the University of Manchester, a gathering of 60 leaders from higher education and related sectors. I joined other university leaders and leaders in philanthropy in discussing the question of how to understand quality in engagement practice. We also explored the possible roles of watermarks, metrics, and engagement classifications in informing global league tables. Executive Director Lorlene Hoyt chaired an interactive plenary session designed to elevate community perspectives on university engagement. We aim to advance these and other strategic priorities at our next global leaders conference, to be hosted by Tufts University and Harvard University in September 2020.
 
Vice-Chair Sara Ladrón de Guevara and I will lead the next Talloires Network Steering Committee meeting to be held in New York City in early December. We expect to host 35 higher education leaders from 18 countries around the world. Topics for discussion include our collective efforts to expand the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification globally. Following a review of work to date in the United States, Ireland, Canada, and Australia, we will conduct a half-day workshop with African university leaders to explore possible pilots in several countries across the continent of Africa. 
 
A distinctive strength of the Talloires Network is its elected Steering Committee. Committee members bring their skills, experience, and resources to the table in guiding and supporting the Network’s strategic direction. They serve three-year terms and reflect the Network’s broad geographic diversity and reach. By the end of 2019, several positions will become vacant. We will call on your university to cast a vote to elect new representatives to serve on the Steering Committee in our next newsletter. Meanwhile, we encourage you to contact the secretariat if there’s a university civic engagement leader who you think should be part of our global leadership body.

I would like to invite all of our Signatory Members to nominate a community engagement program for the annual MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. Nomination forms for the 2020 Prize will be available in early November. Winners of the 2020 Prize will be announced next May and invited to participate in an award ceremony at TNLC 2020. Comprised of higher education leaders from around the world, the Talloires Network Steering Committee helps guide the network in fulfilling our vision, goals, and values. Steering Committee members are heads of academic institutions or leaders of national or regional higher education networks for university civic engagement. Please send nominations to the TN secretariat by November 8. Member universities will be called upon to participate in the election of new representatives. 

The MacJannet Prize was established by the Talloires Network and the MacJannet Foundation to recognize exceptional student community engagement initiatives at Talloires Network universities and contribute financially to their ongoing public service efforts. Nomination forms for the 2020 Prize will be available in early November. Talloires Network Signatory Members will be eligible to nominate a community engagement program.

Documentary: College Behind Bars 
College Behind Bars explores that issue through the lens of the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI), a program that offers free college classes in six New York state prisons for men and women. The documentary, which premieres this fall, is produced and directed by Lynn Novick and executive produced by Ken Burns, a team that created many acclaimed historical documentaries for PBS. Global Forum on Academic Freedom, Institutional Autonomy and the Future of Democracy
The Global Forum was held at the Council of Europe headquarters in Strasbourg June 20-21. Read the declaration adopted by the participants from across Europe, the United States, Latin America as well as Canada, Australia, Japan, and Jordan.

Dr. Agnes Binagwaho on Teaching Global Health Equity
Vice-Chancellor Binagwaho of the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda believes that healthcare is a basic human right. As a practicing pediatrician, she saw babies die when their parents were too poor to access care. The UGHE is creating a new healthcare paradigm where doctors are culturally sensitive and take a holistic view of a patient's environment and the social determinants of health. Learn More.

Social Responsibility and Higher Education: A Call for Chapter Proposals 
The UNESCO Chair in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education is editing a book with a working title of Social Responsibility and Higher Education: International Perspectives on Knowledge Democracy.  The book is being prepared as a contribution to the 2021 UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education. Learn More.

Manual for Developing Intercultural Competencies
This book presents a structured yet flexible methodology for developing intercultural competence in a variety of contexts, both formal and informal. Piloted around the world by UNESCO, this methodology has proven to be effective in a range of different contexts and focused on a variety of different issues. It, therefore, can be considered an important resource for anyone concerned with effectively managing the growing cultural diversity within our societies to ensure inclusive and sustainable development. Evidencing Higher Education for the Common Good 
There is an important role for social science research on higher education. The Centre for Global Higher Education is investigating the contributions of higher education to public goods and common goods for the population as a whole in 10 countries. The research is still in progress, yet some conclusions have been drawn. Learn More.

This project has engaged colleagues from around Europe and beyond, who are sharing stories and thoughts on how they are including core Higher Education Values in their own institutions. The handbook launched at a final event of the Academic Refuge project. Learn More.

Engaging Communities in East Asia
