Enclosed please find the latest UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities newsletter.

Lifelong learning positively affects entire communities. To illustrate this, the current newsletter features the Mayor of Cork, Ireland, who discusses the impact community learning has had on his city. He shares with us the real-life story of Noreen, who despite leaving school at 15, now leads community development projects in her area and is a passionate advocate of education for all. Noreen’s journey highlights the important role cities can play in lifelong learning development.

The city of Cork will also host the third International Conference on Learning Cities from 18 to 20 September 2017, the theme of which is ‘Global goals, local actions: Towards lifelong learning for all in 2030’. In addition to providing a platform to exchange views on this topic, the conference will see 16 cities from around the world receive the UNESCO Learning City Award 2017. The winners of this year’s award were chosen by an international jury in recognition of their outstanding progress in promoting education and lifelong learning in their local communities.

One of this year’s winners, Villa María in Argentina, recently hosted a regional meeting on learning cities and education for sustainable development. The Greek city of Heraklion, meanwhile, organized a local workshop in early April involving all stakeholders in order to advance its learning city development.

As many of you are already aware, UIL Director Arne Carlsen – one of the driving forces behind the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities – will soon be leaving the Institute. We would therefore like to close this introduction with a few words from Mr Carlsen on an initiative that remains close to his heart:

‘This is a project that fills me with joy. It has been encouraging to see the great engagement of local governments and institutions in promoting lifelong learning to better the life of the people in their communities. I hope that this network will further strengthen and continue to grow and that cities all over the world will join the movement to make lifelong learning a reality for all at the local level.’

From learner to leader: The transformative impact of community learning in Cork. Later this year, Cork, in Ireland, will host the third International Conference on Learning Cities. Here, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Des Cahill, a great advocate for learning outside the formal education system, describes the impact community learning is having on his city. Read more

16 cities from around the globe will receive the UNESCO Learning City Award this year. The award will be conferred on the cities during the third International Conference on Learning Cities in Cork, Ireland, which will take place from 18 to 20 September 2017. Read more
 
Learning cities and cultural diversity. The conference Learning Cities and Cultural Diversity was held in Italy in February 2017. Cultural diversity is an important, highly topical issue in Italy. The country received over 10,000 asylum applicants in 2016 alone; new ways in which to integrate the refugees and asylum seekers fleeing conflict and violence in different parts of the world must therefore be explored. ‘Global goals, local actions: Towards lifelong learning for all in 2030’ is the theme of the third International Conference on Learning Cities. It will take place from 18 to 20 September 2017 in Cork, Ireland. Participants will be looking at ways to close the gap between the internationally agreed upon Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and local realities in order to establish a global action plan that will guide cities in implementing lifelong learning and promoting sustainable development. Learning Cities in Action

Villa María in Argentina, a 2017 UNESCO Learning City Award winner, has just hosted the UNESCO GNLC regional meeting titled ‘Learning to Live Sustainably in Cities’. Read more
The city of Heraklion, Greece, encourages active citizenship in an effort to increase education and lifelong learning in communities. The decision was reached during a three-day workshop that was held in the city from 3 to 6 March 2017 with the aim of developing new ways of implementing lifelong learning. Read more
