Public space is supposed to be a forum for free speech and assembly, but what happens when hate and intimidation replace conversation? The recent, horrific events in Charlottesville have served as a painful reminder that while free speech and peaceful ideological exchange in public space is worth protecting, violence and hatred most certainly is not.

“Youth Building Peace” was the theme of UN-Habitat’s International Youth Day last week, which celebrated young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion and social justice. The day embodied a call for all youth to spread the message of peace—particularly during and after the 2017 Kenyan elections.
