In New Orleans, the 2.6-mile Lafitte Greenway—an off-street path on a converted railway that connects 6 diverse neighborhoods and opened in 2015—is bringing people together rather than acting as a barrier between them. And this connectivity isn’t the only thing distinguishing Lafitte from other bike paths in the U.S., it also promises a vibrant space to live, shop, and grab a drink.

After reading an interview with L.A.’s new City Planning Director about the 5 major changes coming to the city, placemaking champion and lifetime Angeleno James Rojas argues that “place” should be at the center of these discussions—not just transportation. “As we construct more multi-family buildings, enhance public transit infrastructure and develop a denser urban fabric, it’s time to reimagine our streets,” he explains. “We need to create an experience, a buzz of human activity and nature intertwined into a healing city for all.”

On Monday, a proposal to provide placemaking and community training in Madison neighborhoods facing challenges was approved by the city’s Finance Committee. The resolution, proposed by Mayor Paul Soglin, involves a $40,500 contract with PPS to provide placemaking training in several neighborhoods, while identifying small-scale pilot projects to grow the sense of empowerment and ownership in local communities.
