This Week's Highlights: March 13 - 19, 2017

The city of Xiamen, China, introduced the world’s longest elevated cycling path this month. Stretching nearly 8 kilometers, this path will give residents a new transportation alternative, while reducing traffic on the city’s already congested highways.

Many U.S. cities are catching on to both the health benefits of parks and their impacts on safety and crime-reduction. Since the 2012 cleanup and restoration project at La Villita Park in Chicago, its violent crime rate is nearly zero. In North Philly, the revitalization of Hunting Park yielded similar results: Since 2009, area crime has fallen a whopping 89%.

There’s nothing quite like Vancouver’s Granville Island. CBC News takes us back 40 years to show how a city’s unique vision turned an industrial wasteland into a thriving public space that has changed the course of Vancouver Urban Design History.
