Universities' Third Mission

Service Learning in Latin America

Many subscribers have an interest in the service role of universities, and it is evident to me from a number of meetings during 2013 that work within Latin America deserves a wider audience. I therefore provide details of the most recent newsletter of the Centro Latinoamericano de Aprendizaje y Servicio Solidario (CLAYSS) based in Buenos Aires. There are many items of interest, and below I have selected just one.

Partnership and Collaboration in a Changing Environment: Community Engagement - NIACE

Jan 23 2014
Europe/London
University of the West of England
Frenchay Campus, Filton Road
Bristol

This is the final conference in the series which will examine different aspects of partnership and collaboration by Higher Education Institutions(HEIs) with a range of partners in the sector.

Most HEIs take their role in civic engagement seriously, but this work has tended to take place on the margins of institutional activity. This conference will give delegates the chance to learn about some of the best practice in the sector, while offering an opportunity to consider what makes for successful and effective community partnership and collaboration in the new HE environment.

The Talloires Network E-Newsletter - December 2013

The Talloires Network is one of the partners with whom PASCAL collaborates. The Network enjoys a high profile and is among the several national and international bodies encouraging universities worldwide to adopt a more centrally-focussed universities' 'third mission' commitment to community service in its different senses and settings.

Here is a copy of Talloires Network E-Newletter for December 2013:

The World Beyond 2015 - Is Higher Education Ready?

Balancing Scientific and Community Interests in Community-Based Participatory Research

This essay from the National Institutes of Health (NIU) explores conflicts that arise between scientific and community interests during community-based participatory research. The authors suggest that potential conflicts can be managed through written agreements between investigators and community partners at the beginning of a study, sometimes with the help of a third party. In certain situations, it may even be useful to publish a dissenting opinion when researchers and community partners cannot agree on an interpretation of findings.

New Issue: Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement

Partnerships recognizes that successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The articles in this peer-reviewed journal focus on how theories and practices can inform and improve such partnerships, connections, and collaborations. Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; or examining practices across disciplines or campuses; or exploring international networks are all encouraged.

In the past decade, nearly half a billion Asians have moved to urban habitations, and the trend continues. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have historically been recognised to serve public goods, with unique social responsibilities in producing knowledge for societal development.
