150th Anniversary of birth of Gandhi-ji

We are organizing a series of events in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Gandhi-ji.  We will be holding a major event in India close to the October 2 date, but we are inviting all those interested to consider marking this date in some way, with a talk, a publication, a symposium or something still more creative. What does the life of Gandhi mean for the world today, for higher education, and knowledge democracy?

Darlene Clover and I are returning to London on the train from Wolverhampton where we had the pleasure of attending a conference organised by the irresistible Sir Alan Tuckett on the subject of The Learning Age 20 Years on. The Learning Age: A Renaissance for a New Britain (1997) was a green paper brought out by New Labour under the political leadership of David (Lord) Blunkett, then Secretary of State for Education and Employment.

As many colleagues will know, we launched the first cohort in the Mentor Training Programme for our Knowledge for Change Consortium (K4C) consortium in January with the on-line component.  I am just back from India where we held the first f2f residency with 19 mentors from seven countries.

In 1998, the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council created the funding mechanism called the Community University Research Alliance, which began what is called the institutionalisation period of community, based participatory research in Canada.  For the first time the funders required that all research applications had to be made by an alliance of community and higher education researchers.
