Santander Could Lay Claim To "Smartest City" Title

Three years after receiving an $11 million grant from the European Union, the city of Santander in northern Spain has transformed itself into a prototype "smart city" that has attracted delegations from China and the US as well as from Google and Microsoft. Its 36-square-kilometer area is studded with 10,000 sensors that deliver data about everything from parking space availability to dumpster capacity to streetlight luminosity. Residents and officials can access the data through their mobile phones or tablets.

Where is the Peace Agenda in Higher Education?

September 21 is the International Day of Peace.  Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO in her message says that we should join together “to make education a force for peace”. What does this mean for those of us working on issues of social justice, engagement and social responsibility within higher education?

Nothing about us, without us

Nothing About Us Without Us is the title of the feature article on Community Engaged Scholarship in this month’s Canadian Newsletter of the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada.  The placement of this as the feature article on the subject of community based participatory research/community engaged scholarship is significant and marks a new level of visibility for the community university engaged research movement in Canada.

Higher Education, Adult Learning and Democracy: Thoughts on Post-2015 Discussions

Civil society has led the charge over the last 30 years drawing the world’s attention to the grand challenges, the big issues and the deep crises that we face as humans amongst the other life forms on the planet we call Earth. The United Nations has been a vehicle to amplify these issues and facilitate conversations with member states, the governments of our many nations. The MDGs are a case in point. The post-2015 goals are the next stage in that process.

“The Rock” Rocks!: 5th CU Expo hosted in Newfoundland, Canada

Newfoundland has an interesting geological history since the western part of the island is an extension of North America and the eastern portion was once part of northern Africa. The province is affectionately known as “The Rock”, as the last glaciation scoured the soil off most of the island. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, an action that remains controversial to this day.

Introducing the social question into higher education

I am shifting early in the morning from London to Barcelona to begin to prepare for the GUNi conference and wanted to share some thoughts based on some of the goings on that I have been part of here in the UK for the past weeks.  I have had a visit to the National Coordinating Committee for Public Engagement in Higher Education in Bristol, a chat with Sir Peter Scott at the Institute of Education in London, a meeting of many of the leaders of the International Association of Universities in Salford, near Manchester, a talk on Knowledge Democracy at the Association of Commonwealth Universities, a brief chat with Prof. Martin Hall, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Salford and a disappointing draw match between my football team Arsenal and Manchester United.  And of course the death of Margaret Thatcher that raised once more the outrageous arrogance and nastiness of the war against the working class unleashed during her term.

Be Knowledgiastic* - GUNi Conference April 13-15, Barcelona

The final programme for the GUNi conference is exciting - A wonderful range of best practices from around the world will be showcased.  World leaders in Engagement and Higher Education will be there.  Leaders of all the major global networks in community university engagement. Funders and Senior policy makers at national and international level will be there.

Make sure that you are there as well!

Hoping to see you,

Budd and Rajesh

UNESCO Chair - GACER News - April 5, 2013
