Sustainability in Higher Education: two news items

The first news item is that the call for papers issued by the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education
(Impact Factor: 1.314) for the Special Issue "Universities, Sustainable Cities and Societies" will close soon. Papers to be considered for the special issue may address one or more of the issues below:

  1. engaging stakeholders (e.g. policy-makers, regulators developers, etc) in supporting
  2. sustainability efforts at city and societal levels;
  3. fostering an understanding of the nature of environment, social and economic challenges
  4. in promoting sustainable cities and societies;
  5. research solutions to sustainability challenges at city level;
  6. exploration of sustainability challenges through research
  7. promote resource conservation in cities and across society

The second news item is a call for papers for the book "Teaching Education for Sustainable Development at University
Level" (Editors: Walter Leal & Paul Pace).

The book, which will be published as part of the "World Sustainability Series" by Springer, one of the top 5 world scientific publishers,  will introduce the latest research and outcomes of projects focusing on teacher education for sustainable development  at universities. In particular, it will describe practical experiences, outline courses, training schemes and other initiatives aimed at promoting teacher education for sustainable development taking place at institutions of higher education.

In order to meet the pressing need for publications which may support teacher education for sustainable development, the book will provide a special emphasis to state-of-the art descriptions of approaches, methods, initiatives and projects from across the world, illustrating how teacher education for sustainable development can be implemented, at an international scale. The publication will provide a timely contribution towards the dissemination of approaches and methods which may improve the way we see and perceive teacher education for sustainable development and how we can better implement it.

The editors are looking for an international, balanced combination of teaching theory and practice, with case studies and examples which may be replicable elsewhere. Expressions of interest for papers dealing with one or more of the following issues, and consisting initially of a 200 words abstract –with all contact details of the authors- are now being sought:

  • principles and practices of teacher education for sustainable development in formal and non-formal education
  • the implementation of institutional strategies aimed at fostering teacher education for sustainable development
  • the role of pre-service and in-service training in enabling teacher education for sustainable development
  • innovative learning practices
  • innovative teaching approaches
  • aspects of policy and governance

Other themes may also be accepted, and interested authors are warmly encouraged to contact the editors and seek advice.
The deadline for submissions of abstracts is the 20th February 2015. Full papers are due by the 30th May 2015.

The book is expected to published in October 2015. Abstracts should be sent by the above deadline to: [email protected]. Further details on submissions and format will be discussed with the authors whose abstracts have been accepted.
