Update from the Chair: President Mark Gearan

Mark GearanWith this edition of the Talloires Network Newsletter, I am pleased to officially announce that the 2014 Talloires Network Leaders Conference will be taking place December 2 – 4, 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa! Holding the conference in Cape Town is a great opportunity for the Talloires Network to highlight the excellent community engagement work being undertaken by universities in the global South, and in particular, the work of our many South African members. The conference will be co-sponsored by the South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum (SAHECEF) and hosted by the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC), consisting of Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Stellenbosch University, University of Cape Town, and University of the Western Cape.

The partnership with these two organizations in planning and executing the conference also highlights a broader goal of the conference – emphasizing the leadership of the numerous TN partner organizations and regional networks. Other goals for the conference include advancing and elevating awareness of the global movement of civic engagement and social responsibility, strengthening TN members’ civic engagement programs and contributing to TN programs.

An exciting addition to the 2014 Leaders Conference will be the participation of a sizable group of student leaders. Much like the presence of student leaders during the Steering Committee’s July meeting, we hope that their participation will enliven and enrich the conference. I would like to invite all Talloires Network members to attend what I am sure will be an engaging and rewarding event. I also encourage all heads of universities planning to attend the conference to bring with them a senior faculty or staff member and a student leader.

Please see the article below for more information and watch for additional communications from the Secretariat as more details become available.

Beginning with the constant need for innovation in every learning organization, the author makes a case for an entrepreneurial style of leadership in education. The author paints a multi-faceted picture of entrepreneurial leadership using stories of real leaders in combination with writings from the social sciences, education, natural sciences, business and the arts.
