This Week's Highlights: April 10 - 16, 2017
    • Want a transportation revolution? Eliminate free parking. In discussing the new Apple Headquarters construction project in Cupertino, CA, The Economist argues that this simple solution to a complex problem would help cities kick traffic jams, pollution, and urban sprawl to the curb.

    • As described in PPS’s 2016 report on Healthy Places, access to green space is a key social determinant of health. Further showing the importance of greening interventions, new research from the Urban Institute looks closely at the health impacts of urban blight, making important connections between U.S. housing policy and public health.

    • In Boston, MassDOT and National Development will create an eight-acre urban park under Interstate 93. As a “new model for how infrastructure can be multifunctional,” the park will connect the South End and South Boston neighborhoods via pedestrian boardwalks, art and cultural installations, and bicycle paths along the channel.

  • Last year, the French-American Foundation asked 3000+ U.S. urbanists: “If you could brainstorm one cities-related question with your French counterpart, what would it be?” Results are in: Responses range from how to make “open streets” experiments permanent, to how community organizers are addressing black identity in France.
