This Week's Highlights: Jan 9 - Jan 15, 2017
  • The “Streets as Places” push is gaining traction all over the world! In 5 years, Madrid’s Gran Via will be completely car free, and beginning in Fall 2018, Paris’ City Center plans to extend its car-free zone by a kilometer, install a guided bus line, and convert a section of auto-centered space into a two-way bike path.

  • From the Wabash Lights in Chicago to the Sabine Promenade in Houston, here is a list of 7 ugly underpasses that have transformed into lively public parks.

  • A new master plan in Hong Kong2030 Plus—seeks to create more user-friendly public space in one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The vision involves converting a number of roads into public use, creating performance areas under bypasses, setting up more pedestrian zones and exploring the use of underground spaces.

  • Miami is getting in on the action too! For the next three weeks, the traffic-laden Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami will become a more people-friendly public space. During this time, three blocks of parking under the Metromover guideway will be home to pop-up public plazas and programming such as concerts, movie screenings, dance and yoga lessons, and food and beer tastings.
